What is Hif'il?
Hif'il is the causative active binyan. It expresses causing someone or something to perform an action, or bringing about a state. It can also express making something happen without a direct object — "to start," "to stop," "to add."
- Causative: הֵבִין (he understood) — literally "he caused understanding to enter"; הִסְבִּיר (he explained) — "caused understanding."
- Bringing about a state: הִתְחִיל (started), הִפְסִיק (stopped).
Recognition signs: הִ prefix in the past tense and in the infinitive (לְהַ... / לְהָ...), and a מַ or מֵ prefix in the present tense. Example: מַסְבִּיר (explaining), מֵבִין (understanding).
