Hebrew Learning Roadmap

A clear, ordered path — so you always know what to study next and why.

Most learners fail not because Hebrew is too hard, but because they jump between resources without a clear sequence. Follow these stages in order and you'll make consistent, measurable progress.

1
A1 — Absolute Beginner
Learn the Alphabet (Alef-Bet)

Start here no matter what. Spend 1–2 weeks drilling all 22 letters until you can recognise each one on sight. Include the 5 final forms. Use the Hebrew Letter Pro game for daily practice.

Goal: Read any Hebrew letter without hesitation.

2
A1 — Absolute Beginner
Learn the Niqqud (Vowel Points)

The niqqud are small dots and dashes written around letters to indicate vowels. Beginner texts, prayer books, and children's books all use them. Learning them now saves enormous confusion later. Use the Hebrew Nikud Pro game.

Goal: Read any vowelised Hebrew word out loud, even without understanding meaning.

3
A1 — Absolute Beginner
Core Vocabulary & Basic Phrases

Build a foundation of 200–300 common words: greetings, numbers, days, colours, family, food. Use the Hebrew Word Quiz and start reading simple children's books with niqqud.

Goal: Understand and produce basic greetings and short phrases.

4
A2 — Elementary
Introduction to Grammar

Hebrew grammar is very different from English. Start with gender (masculine / feminine), definite article (ה / ha-), and basic verb conjugation in present tense. A structured textbook like HaYesod is ideal at this stage.

Goal: Construct simple present-tense sentences correctly.

5
A2 — Elementary
Past & Future Tense, Verb Roots

Hebrew verbs are built on three-letter roots (שורש). Understanding roots lets you decode unfamiliar words from context. Drill past and future conjugations for the most common verb patterns (binyanim).

Goal: Hold a basic conversation about past and future events.

6
B1 — Intermediate
Immersion — Songs, Shows, and Reading

At this stage, passive exposure becomes essential. Listen to Israeli music with the song breakdowns on this site. Watch Israeli TV shows with Hebrew subtitles. Read short news articles. Vocabulary growth accelerates through context.

Goal: Understand the gist of simple audio and written content.

7
B1 — Intermediate
Speaking Practice — Get a Tutor

You cannot become conversational without speaking. Find a native-speaker tutor on Preply or Italki for regular sessions. Even once a week makes a significant difference in confidence and fluency.

Goal: Hold a 10-minute conversation without relying on English.

8
B2 — Upper Intermediate
Advanced Grammar & Unpointed Text

Work on reading unvowelised Hebrew (the way most adult text is written), mastering all seven binyanim verb patterns, and expanding vocabulary into professional or academic contexts.

Goal: Read a newspaper article and understand 80%+ without a dictionary.

General Advice

  • Consistency beats intensity — 20 minutes daily outperforms 3-hour weekend sessions
  • Do not skip the alphabet and niqqud stages, even if you feel impatient
  • Combine this roadmap with a textbook — free resources alone are rarely enough
  • Speak as early as possible, even badly — fluency comes from mistakes, not perfection
